Day 2 on the Bernie and Mimi Tour

Bernie visits the apartment.

Visit to the shul.

Bernie already had plans for lunch.

Chick pea soup.

Joanna's salad.

The best gelato in Firenze, it didn't last long.

Galileo's tomb in the Santa Croce Basilica.

Michelangelo's tomb in the Santa Croce Basilica.

The three women on the Michelangelo's funeral monument represent from left to right: The Art of Painting, The Art of Sculpture, and The Art of Architecture.  The three arts that Michelangelo was was noted for.  "The art of" something is an abstract concept and in the Italian language abstract concepts are always female gendered; like in French "la chat" meaning cat is a female word because of the "la".  This is why the three arts on Michelangelo's tomb are represented with sculptures of females.

Dante's tomb in the Santa Croce Basilica.  Dante isn't actually in there.  He's buried in Ravenna, Italy because in 1865 when his body was discovered again (after 700 years of being hidden) the people of Ravenna wouldn't let Florence have him for treating him so terribly while he was alive.

Machiavelli's tomb, he's the "It's better to be feared than loved" guy.

Donatello's Annunciation.

Giotto.
Italy's most universally known artist.

Santa Croce Basilica.

Ceiling.

Ceiling.

This is sort of a where's Waldo painting.  You have to find the face that is painted twice.
(Blue robes/dress facing the viewer who is actually pointing to her other face)
This is apparently a Medici wife named Eleanor and was very beautiful, but very short from her scoliosis.

Inside the Basilica Santa Croce.

Went to Buca Dell'Orafu, a very tiny restaurant in a basement, for an amazing dinner.
Thank you Bernie!

Bernie and Mimi Visit: Day One

Gift from Susan and Mel Fuss!

Dinner at Golden View, I think it's named for the awesome view of the Ponte Vecchio bridge.

She's been missing her oatmeal.

Ohhh yes!  Bernie brought the good stuff.
These Italians don't know what they're missing!

Forte dei Marmi Beach

Joanna was grossed out by the jellyfish.

Dan loves the waves.

My first time in a body of saltwater!

Tess our Maritimer friend was happy to be on a beach with saltwater.

Really happy.

Joanna in the Mediterranean Sea!
