Fresco Paintings in the Brancacci Chapel

I was not able to take pictures in the chapel, but I took some images from the internet to show what Joanna and I saw in person this past Wednesday in our history class.  The images you see below are just some of the frescoes in the chapel's altar, all of which were painted in the 15th century.

Masaccio and Masolino are the painters who created the chapel's frescoes.  Masaccio was only in his mid-20s when he painted for the church and was so talented that Pope Martin V sent for him to come paint in Rome.  A short while later he died in Rome after being poisoned in 1428.

"Expulsion from the Garden of Eden" Masaccio

"Raising the Son of Theophilus and St. Peter Enthroned" Masaccio and Masolino

"The Payment of Tribute Money" 1425 Masaccio
Story: St. Peter has to pay the tax collector, but doesn't have the money so Jesus tells Peter to go to the river and a fish will have the exact amount of money he needs.

Jesus loves his magic tricks.

The Gori Collection in Pistoia, Italy.

Pistoia train station.

Tight squeeze!

Toby, the local dog everyone loved.

Toby got a little case of stage fright when his owner asked him to shake a paw.

Then we met Danny the gallery dog.

View from the gallery property.

"Firework Launcher"
This sculpture has never been used for launching fireworks, but the design does work and has been recreated elsewhere to be operational.

"Tea House"

Cool aluminum pieces that have been solder together to hug the tree.
The artist thinks of it as "tree jewellery".

Florence Sept. 18th

I love this car, it parks around the block from our apartment and I want it.

Really fancy Shul not too far from us.

Right next to the Shul is Ruth's, below is her menu.

Went to the Santa Croce Piazza where the tourists hang out.

Heaven.
The pastry was flaky and crispy the way it should be and the sweet creamy goop inside had chocolate chips, which are always welcome.
It was absolute perfection Jessica Fishbein.  Devine.

Flowers of Kassel, Germany

Germany!

The Pisa airport restaurant didn't have coffee.

We took a plane to Frankfurt.

Then we took the train to Kassel.

Homer Simpson donut I had for breakfast at the Kassel hotel.

First stop at dOCUMENTA in Kassel, Germany.  Inside was a variety of artists, including Salvador Dali and Emily Carr.  Joanna like Charlotte Salomon who made a play based on her life and some fictional events.   I saw Lee Miller's photographs taken during the WWII of Hitler's apartment and  objects from his study.

Yan Lei, a Chinese artist, filled a room full of paintings, some painted a solid colour and others with images from the internet that he liked.  The idea is that this is his way of cataloguing his internet searches in a physical space.  He only paints the images he likes or finds interesting, then when it's time to paint another image, he hires a car painter to completely cover the canvas in a new colour to start all over.

I like turquoise.

Beautiful building.

Not a dOCUMENTA sculpture, just a nice one.

Second night in Kassel, dinner at a German restaurant.
Everyone's pretty tired.

Tess and Irina.

The best schnitzel I've ever had!

Megan, Joanna, and Jodi resting in between stops.

Joanna Photography.

Classy busker.

A shot from a film where a woman played a flute discovered from thousands of years ago that was made out of a vulture's wing bone and a live vulture perched next to her was forced to listen.
 Artists are weird.

A close up of one of the sculptures in a garden on of the bunker in Kassel.

Laura our professor and Rebecca looking at one of the sculptures in the garden.

View of rooftops from the garden.

Hannah, one of our sculpture majors, getting a closer look.

Trail of sculptures from the garden.

Last night in Kassel, dinner together at the German restaurant.

Must have a German beer, while you're in Germany.

Rest of the group on our last night in Kassel, waiting for our meals.

Where we tried to sleep during our long wait in the Frankfurt Hahn airport.

The Alps!

Finally going back to Florence where our real beds await.
